The University of Virginia (UVA) Research Park (visit the UVA Website) is in the process of expanding their footprint on campus with new program offerings and facilities. As part of their improvements, their team contacted Experienced Brick and Stone about reclaimed large stone granite blocks with the intended use as bollards for infrastructure upgrades. It was great timing because we just reclaimed hundreds of granite blocks from a bridge abutment!
Before concrete became the dominant construction material, heavy retaining walls were built from a variety of stone. We salvage large stone blocks from bridge abutments, retaining walls, and other stone block projects.
Prepping the Order for UVA
The project at UVA started in our production yard, where the salvaged granite blocks were pulled for sorting. In order to see which salvaged blocks met the project’s specific requirements, we measured the different lengths, widths, and thicknesses of the stone in our yard. Twenty of the used blocks whose measurements fell within the appropriate range, were delivered to the project.
Construction and Installation of Products
The antique stone blocks were installed on end, serving as bollards for an entrance to their new building on campus. UVA’s use of these reclaimed bridge abutment stones will “bring the site some much needed texture” according to the Project landscape architect Shanti Levy.
